Waterloo Gate

Located near the historic centre, it stands as a reminder of an important battle fought here centuries ago.

The Battle of Waterloo was fought on June 18th, 1815 and saw Napoleon’s French army defeated by Prussian forces led by Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher. The victory marked an end to years of conflict between France and other European powers, culminating in the Congress of Vienna, which established peace throughout Europe.

To commemorate this momentous event, a grand gate was constructed at Osnabrück in 1821 under orders from King Friedrich Wilhelm III. Designed by Johann Conrad Schlaun, who also designed many other buildings around Germany at that time, it features two tall pillars topped with statues representing Peace and Victory respectively. It is decorated with images depicting scenes from the Battle of Waterloo, as well as symbols such as laurel wreaths and eagles – all symbolizing strength and courage during times of war.

At nightfall each day, visitors can witness a special light show projected onto the archway, which brings alive stories from history through vibrant colours and sound effects – making for an unforgettable experience. For those looking to explore more about this remarkable site, there are guided tours available every day when you can learn even more about its fascinating past while enjoying panoramic views over Osnabrück City Centre below – truly an experience not to be missed.
