A visit to Plönlein will transport you back to medieval times with its unique architecture and atmosphere.
The name “Plönlein” means ‘little square’ and it certainly lives up to its name as one of the smallest squares in the world. It is situated at the junction of two streets: Kobolzeller Steige and Spitalgasse. On one side stands an old half-timbered house known as Klingentorturm (Klingen Tower) while on the other side stands an even older building called Schnatterlochturm (Schnatterloch Tower). Both these towers date back to around 1300 AD, when they were built by local merchants as part of their trading activities.
In between these two towers lies a small fountain which was built in 1608 by Hans Wedel, who also designed many other beautiful fountains throughout Rothenburg ob der Tauber. This particular fountain features four figures representing different trades such as baking and shoemaking that were common among locals during this period.
Today, Plönlein has become a popular tourist attraction due to its unique atmosphere that transports visitors back into another era. The cobbled street leading up from Plönlein towards Marktplatz Square provides stunning views over Rothenburg’s historic centre, where you can take some wonderful photos or just sit down and enjoy watching life go by on this picturesque square.
