Located in the heart of Tarragona, this street dates back to the 12th century, when it was first constructed as part of the old Jewish quarter. It has since become one of the most popular attractions for tourists visiting Tarragona.
The porches are made up of seven arched arcades that line both sides of Merceria Street and were built between 1180 and 1250 AD by wealthy merchants who lived in this area at that time. These porches are some of the oldest surviving examples from medieval times, making them a unique feature not found anywhere else in Spain or Europe. The style used for these buildings is known as Romanesque-Mudejar, which combines elements from both Roman and Moorish architecture styles.
Today, Porches de Merceria Street is home to many shops selling traditional products such as pottery, jewellery, leather goods and other souvenirs for visitors to take home with them after their visit to Tarragona. There are also several restaurants located along this street serving delicious local cuisine such as tapas dishes like patatas bravas (fried potatoes with garlic mayonnaise) or paella Valenciana (rice cooked with chicken).
